The NAFEP Enrollment Process

Step 1: Enroll with NAFEP

  • This is accomplished by going to NAFEP.com, selecting "Professional Information", then selecting "Complete College Services". The CEA must provide their necessary personal information and licensing. The screen is a 2 step screen.
Step 2: Study for CEA Exam
  • Upon completion of enrollment, NAFEP will ship the CEA study guide to the CEA Candidate. The CEA candidate will spend 12-14 hours of study for the exam.

Step 3: Take CEA Exam
  • Once the CEA feels prepared, they can logon to the NAFEP website and take the CEA exam. The exam is 75 questions, open book, and is 90 minutes in length. If the CEA passes the exam with 66% or higher, they become a CEA. This then qualifies CEA to sell NAFEP products and services.

Enrollment Requirements

Minimal Requirements for Membership. Membership with NAFEP requires that you have one of the following professional licenses: Life & Health Insurance License, Registered Securities Representative, Licensed Attorney, CPA, or CFP.

Receiving the CEA® designation - Taking the Test. In order to receive the CEA® designation you are required to pass a 75 question examination with a minimum of 49 correct answers. The test is open book and administered online (recommended method) or via fax and is 90 minutes in duration.

Business Relationship with NAFEP Upon joining NAFEP you will be assigned to a General Agent. The General Agent will be your primary point of contact for all support, materials, marketing, business development, and order processing. You will not be interacting with NAFEP corporate offices for the day to day support once you have passed your exam. Note: The exception to this arrangement occurs with licensed attorneys. NAFEP requires that attorneys be aligned with a general agent, but all client trust orders must be submitted directly to NAFEP.

CEA® Maintenance Requirements Maintenance of your CEA® designation requires that you maintain your primary professional license (CPA, CFP, Insurance, Attorney, Securities). The continuing education and professional standards associated with each of these professional licenses meet all of the requirements for maintaining your CEA® designation. Additionally, you must pay your annual renewal fees.

Termination of your CEA® Your CEA® designation can be terminated for any of the following reasons:

  • Failure to maintain primary license (CPA, CFP, etc.)
  • Failure to comply with the NAFEP terms and conditions of membership
  • Failure to pay for NAFEP services
  • Failure to pay annual renewal of CEA® (There is a 90 day grace period from renewal date)
  • Failure to show annual proof of maintenance of primary professional licenses

At regular intervals, NAFEP will validate your existing, primary license by inquiring with the appropriate state and/or federal agencies or licensing boards. Each CEA® or member must have a valid license at that time in order to maintain their CEA® designation. Failure to receive a positive confirmation of your license status will result in immediate termination of your CEA® and relationship with NAFEP.

Continuing Education Requirements The CEA® designation does not currently require any additional continuing education beyond that required by your primary license. The CEA® can be maintained via your current professional license's CE requirements.

Online Testing Online testing is currently the preferred method of testing for all CEA® Candidates. Candidates are given two (2) opportunities to pass the exam, with a waiting period of 14 days between the exams. If the candidate fails both attempts, then they must wait one (1) full year and re-enroll before taking the exam again. Upon joining NAFEP, you have 1 year in which to take the test for becoming a CEA. After one (1) year you may get an extension for a $60 fee plus the annual dues for that year. CEA®Program Details. CEA® candidates receive NAFEP's Certified Estate Advisor Training Manual as a self study course.
The manual is a concisely written tutorial covering:

  • Trust and estate planning basics
  • Trust and estate taxation
  • Advanced estate planning techniques
  • Trust execution and funding
  • Unauthorized practice of law
Also there is a specific chapter for each trust type which is available through NAFEP. Candidates proceed at their own pace to study for the exam. Self study for most CEA® candidates takes eight to twelve hours actual reading/study time. When the candidate is ready, the exam may be taken at any time at NAFEP's, on-line CEA® Member Center. The candidate has 90 minutes to complete the 75 multiple choice questions. The on-line center scores the test and reports results back immediately.
Approximately 90% of all candidates pass the exam on their first try (much of your existing training and experience will be applicable). Those who fail must wait at least 30 days before re-testing. Upon successful completion of an exam, candidates are entered in NAFEP's CEA® rolls and are mailed an 8-1/2" X 11" deluxe certificate suitable for framing. NAFEP will confirm the current status of a CEA's credentials to members of the general public who inquire directly from NAFEP. Certification information may also be obtained by the public from the Internet. NAFEP does not require separate or additional continuing ed to maintain your CEA®. The continuing ed and regulatory requirements of either life insurance, CPA, CFP or attorney licenses are accepted by NAFEP as adequate to maintain your CEA® designation. That is, you need only to remain current with any of: Life insurance, CFP, attorney license or a CPA designation, and to provide NAFEP with proof of your successful completion of continuing ed for those licenses or certifications.
