A very good and optimistic article. What is the tax treatment when the unrelated business results in a loss (K-1 part III section 20: V=-395). Can I deduct this as a capital loss? is it short term? long term?

Great info. It SOUNDS like someone knows what they are talking about …. unfortuntely something all too rare when it comes to self-directed IRAs. Would be helpful if they could cite particular sections of the tax code, or specific I.R.S. court rulings. But thanks a whole lot anyhow.
